What is a retail media network?

A retail media network is a media business operated by a retailer, using its own digital properties, physical stores and first-party purchase data to sell advertising to the brands it already trades with.

Retail media works because the retailer holds the two things advertisers cannot buy elsewhere: proof of purchase, and the moment before it. The difficulty is not demand, it is the operating model underneath.

How it works

Retail Media Network in practice.

The component parts, in the order they usually need to be addressed.

01

Onsite inventory

Sponsored listings, search placements, category and basket surfaces on the retailer's own site and app, where intent is explicit and outcomes are measurable to the sale.

02

Instore inventory

Screens, audio, sampling and shelf-edge media, treated as addressable inventory with venue taxonomy and measurement rather than as marketing collateral.

03

Offsite extension

Retailer audiences activated across open web, CTV and social inventory, with closed-loop measurement back to transactions.

04

Closed-loop measurement

Exposure joined to purchase data under a lawful basis, producing incrementality and return metrics that justify budget shifted out of trade spend.

Common misreadings

What retail media network is not.

  • It is not trade marketing renamed, the buyer, the currency and the accountability are different.
  • It is not solely onsite search; the durable value comes from combining onsite, instore, offsite and data.
  • It is not a data-selling business; the data stays with the retailer and is activated, not exported.

What is a retail media network?

A retail media network is a media business operated by a retailer, using its own digital properties, physical stores and first-party purchase data to sell advertising to the brands it already trades with.

Why are retail media margins so high?

The inventory and the audience data already exist as a by-product of trading, so incremental revenue carries very little incremental cost once the operating model is in place.

What usually goes wrong?

Inventory is never properly defined, measurement cannot be verified by the buyer, and no one owns pricing, so the network stalls at pilot revenue and becomes another negotiation line in the trading conversation.

How this applies to your sell side

From definition to revenue.

Retail Media Network is one layer of a sell side revenue system. Quintworx connects it to your inventory, audience data, direct sales and programmatic demand, so the concept becomes commercial infrastructure rather than theory.

Definitions are where the commercial model starts.

Quintworx works on retail media network as an architecture problem, not a product purchase.
